1961 Missouri State Tournament

SEDALIA, MO...The Missouri State Championship Horseshoe Pitching Tournament wound up three days of play at the Missouri State Fair. Bob Bales of Kansas City edged out Bill Kempfe of Alma for the championship. Bales was the title holder in 1940 and 1942, while Kempfe held the title in 1959. In the regular competition, Bales and Kempfe had ended up in a tie, but Bales won out in the play-off. Earl Winston of LaMonte, superintendent of the department took third place honors. Several other deadlocked and ties were broken by total points accumulated during their games.

Defending Champion, John Elkins 6-Time Missouri State Champion was dropped into sixth place by the strong competition.

At the state meeting held on the fairgrounds, Earl Winston was re-elected President, Charles Killgore of Stewartsville was elected Vice-President and Alfred O. Smith was re-elected Secretary/Treasurer.
